Guests in our Christiana store may recognize this friendly face but if not, don’t feel bad! Mike is always on the move receiving shipments, stocking shelves, helping guests and more! He’s a family man with a lot of cooking know-how, who is willing to share! Learn more about our coworker Mike below:
Q: Tell us your Kitchen & Company story.
A: I started as a seasonal employee in November 2010. I came on as a full-time employee the following spring. I first applied because I was a frequent shopper here, enjoyed the knowledge of the other employees, and it seemed to be a fun place that also took care of their guests. I started covering the food and knife departments based on my restaurant background. I’m now an assistant manager and do a lot of the receiving.
Q: What is your favorite food to cook?
A: My favorite food to cook is chili. I was in several competitions when I was in the restaurant business and seem to have a knack for it. My family and friends have different tastes so I usually end up making four different styles at one time (hot, mild, with beans, without beans, or any combination of those). It’s also a great stress reliever.
Q: What is your favorite tool in the kitchen?
A: I love the new Zwilling Pro line of knives. The shape of the bolster makes it easy to handle and hold during my occasional cooking frenzies. My favorite tool when I making my chili is the Progressive onion chopper (no laughing). It is quick and makes great, consistent pieces. I can use the additional time when I’m making 3 – 4 gallons of chili.
Q: What is a fun fact no one would typically know about you?
A: I was one of the exclusive caterers for the America’s Cup Yacht Races in Newport, RI. I worked private dinners for guests like Walter Cronkite and “intimate” banquets for 800-900 people in various mansions.
Q: If you could have any person over for dinner, who would it be and what would you cook for them?
A: I would love to have my mom over for dinner one more time. We would do an authentic New England clam bake with all my relatives and my mom would have a chance to see her grandchildren for the 1st time.
Q: Tell us about one of your favorite guest interactions.
A: One of my favorite guest interactions was with a young couple from the Philadelphia area who were remodeling their kitchen. They originally came in looking for some Shun Knives and some cookware. They had come once before with her brother who is a chef in the Wilmington area. They purchased several knives the first evening and came back the following week for a knife I had received from another one of our stores. They ended up visiting the store four weeks in a row and they still stop in every few months to visit and shop.
Bonus, a little love from his coworkers:
“I love watching Mike interact with our guests. He truly understands what great customer service is and should always be. When he sells a Shun chef’s knife, Mike doesn’t just sell the knife, he shares his knowledge and passion and that gives our guests a reason to shop with us, again and again.
And he does make a great chili!”
